Meet Chris

Christopher is a lifelong McDowell County resident, honorably discharged US Air Force veteran, former corrections officer and former children's services social work supervisor who brings all those experiences into his practice of law in this area.

Christopher Houston Rumfelt is a lifelong resident of McDowell County. He is the son of Fred and Marlene Rumfelt and grew up in the Glenwood community. He has one son, Fredrick.

After graduating from McDowell High School, Christopher enlisted in the US Air Force. He was honorably discharged after serving as a satellite communications technician with the 1879th Communications Squadron with NORAD/US Space Command in Colorado Springs, CO at Falcon Space Station, Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson Air Force Base.

Following his military service, Christopher returned to Marion and became employed by the NC Department of Corrections, while attending Montreat College, where he graduated with a degree in history and human services. Christopher then became employed in mental health, working as a children's case manager, while also attending UNC-Chapel Hill in the M.S.W. program.

Christopher then transitioned into social work, becoming a child protective services investigator for Mitchell County Department of Social Services, and then moving on to Buncombe County DSS in the same capacity. While working for DSS, Christopher's lifelong dream of being an attorney was reignited as he saw a need for more attorneys in the area who focused upon affordable legal services for children and families in crisis. Christopher applied to the Charlotte School of Law in order to pursue his dream, and graduated with his juris doctor degree after commuting to Charlotte daily from Marion for three years. During law school, Christopher completed an extensive internship with a local law office in Marion and gained a wealth of experience in family and criminal law.

Following law school graduation Christopher accepted a position with Mitchell County DSS as a children's services supervisor while preparing for the NC Bar Exam. He passed the Bar Exam in February 2016 and began the transition to opening a new law practice in Marion on June 1, 2016.

Christopher brings a unique perspective into the practice of law. His years of work experience with DSS allowed him to see firsthand the need for affordable and effective legal services in both family and criminal law areas while treating everyone with respect and dignity. This employment also gave him many opportunities to work within the court system preparing monthly court filings, operating under court orders and doing court testimony. Furthermore, his 18 month internship gave him many opportunities to assist in representation of clients in family, criminal and juvenile courts in McDowell County, as well as drafting complaints, motions, answers, and orders for the court. Christopher brings these experiences and knowledge into his practice of law.

Christopher's practice is mainly focused upon criminal and family law matters in McDowell and Mitchell Counties, but he is available to assist clients anywhere within North Carolina. Feel free to contact Christopher for any legal need you may have. He will be glad to discuss your situation with you and answer any questions. If it is an area outside of his expertise he will be glad to assist you in finding an attorney in your special area of need. If it is a matter that he can assist you with he will be glad to diligently work on your behalf and competently and zealously advocate for you.
